H is for Healings of Jesus

After a few weeks off because of Christmas vacation, we resumed our Kid's Bible club last night. If you're new to following my blog, I wanted to let you know that I use a book called, Bible Stories from A to Z (Teacher Created Materials) as my guide for each week's lessons. Sometimes I add or delete things as we go along based on time or just because I want to be a bit more creative!;) This week we did "H is for Healings of Jesus." 

Bible Time: We talked about how Jesus performed miracles in people's lives by healing them. We focused on the story in John 9, which talks about how Jesus made a blind man see again.

Instead of learning a new verse, we played a review game with the nine verses we've already learned this year. I wrote the references to a few of the verses onto construction paper and taped them onto the floor. Next to them, I made squares from blue tape. If they could say the verse with just a little help at the beginning, then they could hop on the square. I got this idea from Child Evangelism Fellowship. Mika and Skylar both did a super job reviewing their verses, so they both got a prize at the end.

Craft time: We did two projects during our time together. The first one was this "Jesus, the Healer" poster. I photocopied the picture of Jesus for them to color. Then, they were to place band-aids around it. Next to each band-aid, they were to draw a picture of themselves and family members. It's a great reminder that Jesus still heals today.

Our second project came from a different activity book called, Bible Message Make -n- Takes, by Susan L. Lingo. In the Old Testament, God commanded the people to write His Word on their doorposts and keep it close to them. The people made little boxes or tubes called, "mezuzahs." They kept Scripture inside of these boxes and kept them beside their doors. I shared Psalm 119:11 which says, "Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee."  

To make this project, I typed up all of the nine review verses and cut them up into small pieces of paper. Then, we covered a toilet paper tube with contact paper, punched holes at the top, and tied a piece of yarn to it. A piece of foil was taped to the bottom of the tube.

The kids and I rolled up each piece of paper individually and placed them inside the tube. Now, they can hang their mezuzahs somewhere in their house and have God's Word close to them.

Snack time: I teased Mika and Skylar by telling them we were going to be eating mud for our snack--the same kind of mud Jesus used on the blind man's eyes. After their strange reactions, I told them we would have mud pudding (chocolate, of course!) I gave them an Oreo cookie to crush into their pudding. For the finishing touch, I let them put whipped cream on (the kind in the can). The picture above was Skylar's pudding. We couldn't believe how beautiful his whipped cream was!
