Fun with paper quilling

On the first day of our trip in California, Mia wanted to do a craft right away.  I bought a paper quilling project a while back and thought we'd give it a try.  Paper quilling is the art of twirling narrow strips of paper to form shapes that when put together, can be made into all sorts of things.  In the kit, a paper background was included, so we decided to make a little girl for our scene.  Our friend, Alexia, and Mia's little brother, Jaden, joined in with us.

The hardest part in this project for Mia was the actual paper twirling.  A tool was included to make it easier, but it was still a little hard for her.  After we finished making the little girl, we made apples for the tree.  Here, Mia is gluing everything on.

Jaden wanted to get involved with us, so I gave him a strip of paper and a pencil to twirl.  All in all, this is a great and fun project to do with kids. The first time I heard of it was at a teacher's convention, where an experienced art teacher told us about it.  It is a quite unique type of art and perhaps one that not a lot of people do.
